How You Can Defend Our Democracy

How You Can Defend Our Democracy

Guaranteed by the Constitution, the following seven values, drawn from America 250: Guide for Defending Democracy, reflect what we are fighting to protect and ensure for everyone in America.

Every day you wake up in America, you should be able to say and believe:

I have rights.

I can vote.

I have a fair shot at everything this country has to offer.

I have leaders who represent me.

I have protection from hate and targeting.

I have access to the truth.

The rules apply to everyone, not sut some of us.

We must continue holding our leaders accountable to protecting and upholding them.

TAKE YOUR VOICE BACK

FOUR-STEP PLAYBOOK

This isn’t about party. It’s about power and who has it. We live in a democracy where we decide who represents us. You have that power. It’s time to take it back.

Know your ballot. Ask hard questions. Apply pressure. Spread the word.

The steps below show you exactly how.

STEP 1

KNOW WHO’S
ON YOUR BALLOT

Election Day is November 3, 2026. Visit Vote411.org and enter your address to see exactly who and what you’re voting on. Think beyond Election Day too. School boards, city councils, and local officials make decisions that affect your life every day. Find out who they are and how to reach them.

STEP 2

WRITE DOWN
WHAT MATTERS TO YOU

Before you engage any leader, get clear on your priorities. Is it voting rights? Education? Housing? Jobs? Health care? Knowing what you care about most helps you cut through the noise and ask questions that actually matter.

STEP 3

ASK THE
RIGHT QUESTIONS

We all see the campaign ads, but knowing where they stand on your issues is a different story. Use the America 250 guide to write 2-3 direct questions for each leader asking for your support. You can:|

  • @ them on social media in a post or story.

  • Call their office or drop them an email.

  • If they’re in your town, you can swing by a community meeting or town hall.

STEP 4

EVALUATE, THEN ACT

Compare what leaders say against what they’ve actually done. Charisma is not a policy. Party affiliation is not a values statement. Look at the record, weigh it against your priorities, and make your decision. Then:

·      Vote and bring someone with you.

·      Talk to your family, your neighbors, your coworkers.

·      Post what you learn. Host a conversation.

The people making decisions about your community respond to organized, informed people. Not silence.
